
Picking the Right Heat Lamps for Your Poultry House
When you’re setting up an automated poultry farm, the heat lamps you pick basically decide how much money you’re going to bleed every month. Pick the wrong ones, and you’re just paying for wasted electricity. We look at the actual physics of how heat moves so you can keep the cost per bird as low as possible. The Voltage Headache We figure out the wattage based on exactly how much heat your brood area needs. Now, choosing between 220V and 380V isn’t just about what your electrical panel can handle—it changes your entire wiring setup. Going with higher voltage is usually the way to go for big houses. It lets you run longer wires without losing power along the way, so the lamp at the far end of the building puts out the same heat as the one right next to the breaker. If you go too low on the wattage, your lamps have to run at 100% all the time. That’s a recipe for burnt-out filaments and a lot of annoying replacements. Shortwave vs. Longwave (And why it matters) We stick with quartz-halogen tech because it reacts fast. Shortwave radiation is great because it cuts right through the air and hits the birds directly. Think about it: why waste money heating the air in the rafters when you only care about the livestock on the floor? We often use coated tubes to tweak the spectrum. It stops those “hot spots” from forming, which can stress the birds out, and instead spreads a nice, even warmth across the ground. The Practical Stuff We use standard R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because they’re a simple drop-in. The last thing you want is your crew spending half a day rewiring a socket in the middle of a winter cold snap. It should be a five-second swap. But here’s the thing… high-density lamps put out a lot of intense heat in one spot. If your ventilation isn’t talking to your heating system, you’ll end up with pockets of stagnant, stifling air. You’ve got to balance the heat output with your airflow. Otherwise, you’ll accidentally bake the birds while you’re just trying to keep their feet warm. It’s much easier to plan the layout right now than to pay for an expensive retrofit later.
